Learn More about the Adoption Process

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION.

Starting January 2025 our adoption fee will be $800 CAD. This change is being made in an attempt to come closer to covering our costs. * This fee includes transport to Vancouver/Victoria, B.C., and all vetting, vaccinations DHPP+L+C, booster, and rabies, spay or neuter, worming, flea/tick prevention, dental cleaning if necessary, and any other procedures that may be required for individuals such as mange treatment, x-rays, orthopaedics, etc. We also do a blood test for ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, leishmaniasis and heart worm. For older dogs, or ones that come to us in very poor condition, we do a blood and urine analysis.
Please submit an application for the dog you are interested in. Most of our dogs have not been exposed to children or cats, and are not house trained, so expect to do some work in that regard. In general, we do not recommend our dogs for a home with toddlers.
Once application is received we will contact you if we feel you’re a suitable candidate and request photos of your home and yard environment. We provide videos and photos of your dog if you have been selected and have on going communications to discuss the dog and how it will fit with you. Once travel arrangements have been made we organize a meeting and pick up date and place. Normally this is done in a safe home environment where all safety protocols are gone over again.
We highly recommend a two-week trial period or fostering to adopt to ensure a good match is made. During this period we will provide you with dog food, collar, leash, kennel, and blanket/bed. Veterinary care must be approved by us ahead of time.
No adoption fee is collected until you have made your decision to finalize adoption.

We ask that you consider thoroughly whether you are ready for a new canine companion in your household and ensure that everyone in the household is on the same page. Ask your hubbies, please, before contacting us! No impulse inquiries, please! Have you read the dog’s biography carefully and considered all points?
Our resources and time is limited, so we would prefer not to spend it checking out homes where all things have not been considered thoughtfully. Thank you.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

MORENA

3 years
3.5 kilos

Morena is a gentle, somewhat delicate and lanky chihuahua mix looking for a quiet home on Vancouver Island or Vancouver area.

She can easily live with another dog. Although she is quite independent, she does on occasion engage in play with other dogs her size. Rough play scares her and care must be taken when handling her initially, as she’s nervous about restraint.

Morena is travelling to Vancouver, then to Victoria on March 12th, and will be fostered with another small dog upon arrival, and looking for her forever home shortly thereafter.

Morena was an owner surrender from an overcrowded home.

ADOPTION PENDING

DARLING

Spayed Female
8 months
10 kilos
Breed Guess: Unknown Mixed Breed

Darling is just that! This young, friendly girl is looking for a home (Victoria/Vancouver) starting early March. She is social with other dogs and just loves to play, although right now she needs close monitoring because of recent surgery.

LD was surrendered to us after being run over by a car and sustaining a femoral fracture and broken pelvis. She has had surgery (Dec 1) and is doing great. X-rays available upon request.

She is a submissive dog and very affectionate. She has not been tested with children. Living with a cat could be okay, and definitely fine with another dog. She is doing well with house training but still required to be monitored when indoors.

Darling enjoys having toys and mental stimulation to keep her busy, otherwise she’ll get into things, like shoes. She really wants to join in, and gets frustrated, when the other dogs are playing and is quite vocal about it. Shortly, she will be able to partake, but to be on the safe side her interactions are short and supervised. She is a loving and submissive girl, and loves to give licks.

This dog is for someone active who is willing to work with puppy energy and behaviour. No dog parks.

Available Vancouver Island/Vancouver early March.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

DULCE

To be spayed female
5 months
7 kilos

Super energetic, curious, smart and happy puppy looking for someone ready and willing to take on her energy, teach basic obedience and do all things “puppy”. She quickly learned to be quiet in her crate although she protested a lot initially. She now sleeps overnight in her crate. She is super playful with the other dogs here, large and small. She is too rambunctious to be in a home with small children. She still needs to be leash trained, spayed and finish her vaccination series.

Dulce was surrendered by her owner due to personal reasons to our veterinarian.

Available Vancouver Island/Vancouver in July.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

FIONA

Spayed female
4 years
3 kilos
Breed Guess: Unknown Mixed Breed

Fiona is a mini-size, cuddly, velcro dog! She wants to be everywhere you are. Upon arrival at the shelter she vocally protested when left alone or when you are out of her sight. She has improved but anyone interested in this little girl will need to understand she’s not for the work all day kind of home. If you’re looking for a constant companion Fiona could be for you. She’s fine with other dogs and okay with a cat. Fiona has a misshapen right ear due to probably having suffered a hematoma.

Dulce was found running along a busy highway near Leon, Mexico.

Available Vancouver Island/Vancouver early March.

ADOPTION PENDING

SONNY

Neutered Male
1.5 years
5 kilos
Breed Guess: Unknown Mixed Breed

This little Sonny boy is a real lover and is looking for a home as an only dog, or with a female dog, in order to have a successful adoption. He prefers to have all the attention, although he could have playmates away from the home. He has medium energy and is crate trained. However, as with all the male dogs we have for adoption, will require a belly-band for the first little while until he learns where he should appropriately urinate.

Sonny was pulled from Animal Control in Guanajuato.

Available Vancouver Island/Vancouver early March.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

Juanis

1 year
16 kilos
Breed guess: Unknown Mixed Breed

JUANIS would love the opportunity to fly to BC in one of the spaces we have reserved mid January.

What does she need?

She needs an adopter / foster-to-adopt / foster home.

Juanis is now one year old and weighs approximately 16 kilos. She’s a shy lady and will require an insightful, dog savvy home that can let her blossom at her own speed. She’s fine with other dogs. Her favourite playmate is Muyal, and she’s quite submissive with the other dogs at the shelter. She’s not had a lot of exposure outside of the shelter but we do take walks in the rural area nearby.

Juanis is sister to Lili and Cuca (now Bailey) both whom are now adopted in Victoria BC.
Does Juanis have a place to land if she leaves Mexico ? I sure hope so. She deserves a home of her own where she can become all she can be.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

Goose

Neutered male
7-8 years
15 kilos
Breed guess: Unknown Mixed Breed

Goose is a silly, smart, but tenacious Corgi Mix dog longing for a home that will provide him with the structure and consistency he needs.

Our vision for Goose is in a home with someone that can provide him with attention, boundaries and physical and mental stimulation. He would do great with a fair, but firm, man or woman that doesn’t let him get away with his BS (boundary shoving😆).

That is what got him into trouble with his last “mom”. 🙁 He needs clear rules and boundaries or he will create his own. Once the rules are clear for him he is a great little dog. Goose does have a history of biting so he is not for everyone, but we know that the right home is out there, and the key to success is creating and maintaining rules for him.

Goose is now in a new foster home and doing very well with his two humans and two other doggos there. Please see Goose’s progress on our Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100051459441973

Goose’s adoption fee will be reduced.
In Victoria, B.C.

He would do well as an only dog, but could also be with a mature female dog. A meet and greet can be facilitated for this. No children or cats please.

Goose is not a candidate for the dog park, however, he can be off leash in quieter areas or out hiking, and with the use of an e-collar he has 💯recall.

History:

Goose was rescued six years ago in Guanajuato, Mexico.

After his arrival in Victoria, he received “board and train” with Mission Accomplished Dog Training as well as occasional boarding with them during his adoption period. After six years with the family, and unfortunately failing to provide him with his needs, Goose was returned to us. He was very protective of his “Mom” and with the arrival of a new baby it proved to be too much for his people.

Give Goose a chance!

If you’d like to hear more about Goose please contact us, or complete an Application for Adoption.

Goose will return to the shelter home in Mexico if he does not find a home soon.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

Lima

Spayed Female
7-8 years
15 kilos
Breed guess: Unknown Mixed Breed

Lima is an active dog finding herself looking for a new home. Sadly, the situation in her current home is not ideal and it feels like her family is at loose ends. The main issues are Lima’s ability to escape, her prey drive and sometimes dog reactivity. Given the opportunity, she will escape from her yard and rocket around the neighbourhood, much to everyone’s dismay. She is currently going for runs with one of the family members, but her primary caretaker now has physical limitations. Lima adores children and has lived with them all her life. She is a nice compact size at approximately 15 kilos. However, she is strong and solid!
Lima is looking for a dog-savvy home that can meet her physical and mental needs.
So, if anyone out there has the desire to put in the energy and vigilance to keep this girl under control and provide her with a loving home and exercise, Lima is waiting.
She will be fully vetted and come with all her gear and a crate. A small re-homing fee will apply.
Please note: We know all the things that “should have” or “could have” been done, but at this point we just want to explore the possibility of Lima finding a more suitable place to live out the rest of her life.
A fully secured yard is essential. Perhaps a single walker/hiker would like a companion to accompany them and then go home for snuggles. No cats or small animals.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

Patsy

13 years
10 kilos
Breed Guess: Unknown Mixed Breed

Despite her age, Patsy is still a vibrant little miss and is looking for a home to live out her retirement years. Remarkably, her blood work is all normal, however she is on a Urinary diet due to having crystals. Because there was a bit of blood in her urine an x-ray was taken to ensure she did not have stones and she was put on antibiotics. Her teeth were in a terrible state so she has had them cleaned and one tooth was pulled. Because dental x-rays are not available in Guanajuato it is unknown whether any of her other teeth are compromised, but we suspect so. A complete dental workup is recommended upon her adoption and Mex-Can will pay for it. She is currently living with several other dogs her own size at the shelter and getting along fine.
History: Found as a stray/abandoned.
Not yet tested with cats or children.

Below dogs are in Guanajuato, Mexico and awaiting transport to B.C.
We are always looking for flight angels on these routes:
MEX – YVR on Aeromexico
PVR – YYJ on WestJet
Please contact us if you have a current ticket with any of these.
You could help a dog get to its new forever home. Thank you! marlenegdavis54@gmail.com

ADOPTED

Mango

Neutered Male
1 year
5 kilos
Breed guess/Looks like: Terrier mix

Mango is a frisky,
playful, friendly and moderately active little guy that would enjoy going for plenty of walks, yard play and snuggle times.  He is great with other dogs, big and small.  However, we don’t recommend him for a home with cats or other small animals as he has quite a bit of interest in them (chasing).  He’s pretty good on the leash but does get quite excited and pulls. He really wants to explore!

Because he is such an explorer he will need a well fenced yard and care taken when opening doors, gates, etc.  For that reason we don’t think he’d do well in a home with children coming and going.  He could do fine in an apartment or condo if his person is home most of the time and can monitor behaviour when alone (or help from neighbours).

Mango can get a ride to Vancouver, B.C. on January 12th if he has a home, foster or foster-to-adopt to go to.

History: Surrendered to Animal Control Guanajuato, pulled by a local rescue person and then moved to Mex-Can shelter.

ADOPTED

Chia

Spayed female
4 years
11 kilos
Breed Guess: Collie x Spaniel + More

Chia is a friendly, social and inquisitive dog that is looking for an active home. She would benefit from having a person or persons that can dedicate their time to adequately exercising her and do some basic training. We don’t think she would suit a home with children because of her energy level.  Could she be your hiking companion?  Chia is a willing learner.

She will also need a secure yard/home as she gets pretty excited to get out and go on an adventure.  She’s a small/medium at 11 kilos, but is compact and strong, with the urge to pull, so leash training will be on her “to do” list.   Let’s get Chia on the transport to Victoria/Vancouver on January 12th.  Apply now for CHIA.

ADOPTED

CHIQUIS

Spayed female

10 years
Breed guess: Chihuahua X

ADOPTED

Cindy

Spayed female
3 year
3 kilos
Breed: Chihuahua Cross

Cindy is in a foster home in Victoria, B.C. and is ready for her forever home.  Cindy is a very affectionate, sweet and silly girl that gets along with other dogs, loves people, but has not been tested with cats or children.  She would suit a home with someone home most of the day as she has some anxiety when left alone.  No condos or apartments please as this may upset neighbours.  She’ll require a secure home and yard as she is so tiny she can squeeze through any little space, and she will if she wants to get to you bad enough!  Cindy is almost house trained.  She will need to get out to her “spot” 3-4 times daily, and because she is fully crate trained this can be used as a tool as well. She has slept outside of her crate without incident.  She likes her walks but also likes to stop and sniff around her, and can be quite persistent about stopping!  Good in the car and likes to fetch. She is also pretty good at puzzle toys!
History: relinquished after being brought in to a sterilization campaign.

CALLIE

Spayed female
4 kilos
4 years
Breed guess: Chihuahua X

Callie is a wiggly, friendly little dog looking for a moderately active home for on-leash walks and snuggle times in the home. She is currently living with several other dogs, big and small, and is doing well with them although a little nervous of the bigger dogs.

We prefer no condos or apartments in case there is a barking issue, unless you are home all day to monitor her. We haven’t tested her with cats yet. No children please. Fenced yard will be important.

History: Abandoned along with Jon on a quiet lane in Guanajuato, Mexico last February.

ADOPTED

LILY

Spayed female
14 kilos
10 months
Breed Unknown – Mixed

Lily is looking for a patient home to help her blossom. She has been in foster since June and made great progress and now it’s time for her to move into a permanent loving home. Lily enjoys her walks although still apprehensive around new people, especially men, but she enjoys meeting up with the regulars at our local field. She is a snuggly dog, is crate trained, healthy, knows sit and is learning some impulse control. Lily would really benefit from having a confident and playful canine in her new home. No kids please, possibly ok with cats. Only active individuals need apply.

ADOPTED

Nico

Neutered male
9 months
17 kilos
Breed Guess: Lab

Nico has moved to the Mex-Can shelter now.

Nico was rescued as a puppy by one of our local contacts, Flor, in Guanajuato. He has been offered for adoption locally without success.

ADOPTED

CHULA

Spayed female
12 kilos
1.5 years
Breed guess: Husky X
IN VICTORIA, B.C.

Meet the lovely happy-go-lucky Chula who is looking for an active home that can dedicate a couple of hours a day to her well being and fulfill her exercise needs. She would make a great companion for a jogger or hiker. She has proven to be a very social dog with all humans and other dogs. Is a very fast runner, is agile, and loves to play and will chase a ball. She is probably, however, too rambunctious for small children and she would not do well with cats in the home. She could easily live with another dog in the home. Chula is a well adjusted dog that was rescued as a very young puppy and had the good fortune of growing into adulthood in the home of a local rescuer before she moved over to the Mex-Can shelter for adoption. Despite being what we think is a possible Husky mix, she is a perfect size at around 28 pounds. A fenced yard is a must.

ADOPTED

LAIKA

Spayed female
6 kilos
4 years
Breed guess: Aussie/Spaniel/Chihuahua
IN VICTORIA, B.C.

Laika has been in Victoria, BC, decompressing since mid January. This little lady is extremely sensitive and was quite timid and fearful when she arrived but has grown to really love her current foster and the other four dogs in the household. She is very playful with other dogs. She loves, more than anything, going for walks. She displays some excitement reactivity when seeing other dogs but we have been working on distraction. We think she’s a smart cookie and could learn tricks/agility if her guardian was up to it. Ideally, we would like anyone interested in adoption to spend several weeks getting to know her, and for her to trust, before moving on to her permanent home. She had to get over a lot of challenges in the last couple months (and possibly from past trauma) so we think a fast move might set her back somewhat. Not sure, but we think she prefers female humans. And, she does not like being greeted or handled with pressure.
